Hot Rod City Will Have Classic Cars On Display On Opening Night, Whose Racing Participants Include Three Time And Current AMA National Speedway Champion Billy Janniro
Gentlemen, start your 160 lb., 90 horsepower Motorcycles! With NO BRAKES!
On the same weekend that drivers in Indianapolis are gearing up for another 200 laps around their motor speedway, the original ?Extreme Sport? of Speedway Motorcycle Racing makes its long awaited debut as ?The Fastest Show in Las Vegas.?
The Sin City Speedway (www.sincityspeedwaylv.com), a 2,000 capacity facility located just south of the world famous Strip at the corner of Sunset and Las Vegas Boulevard?and next to the Las Vegas Sports Arena?is set for its grand opening on Saturday, May 26. Gates open at 7 p.m. The opening ceremonies commence at 7:30 p.m. and the racing starts at 8 p.m.
On May 10, the promoters of the venue announced that three time and current AMA National Speedway Champion Billy Janniro had signed up to race on opening night. Nicknamed ?The Kid,? Janniro is also a four-time and current SRA U.S. National Speedway Champion, and two time and current California Speedway Champion.
Pam ?Pinky? Bennett, one of the few female Speedway Motorcycle Racers, is coming out of retirement to participate on opening night, whose festivities include a display of select classic cars by Hot Rod City, a multi faceted, Las Vegas based automotive Mecca that celebrated its grand opening on May 12.
Continuing the tradition of extreme popularity that the grassroots motorsport has enjoyed throughout Southern and Northern California for over 40 years?including 45 years at the Costa Mesa Speedway in Orange County?Sin City Speedway trumpets the fact that ?these 500cc alchohol burning motorcycles with no brakes are here in a big way!?
The prime location of the Sin City Speedway allows patrons to enjoy the 20 or so races per nite?featuring from four to eight participants and numerous elimination rounds leading to the final race?while watching planes fly overhead and land at nearby McCarran International Airport. The lights of the Strip are also in the near distance, twinkling after dark. On July 4th, spectators will be able to watch nearby fireworks displays from their seats.
The venue, which will host racing nights on the last Saturday of every month for its first six months in addition to a July 4th extravaganza, was founded by top professional racers Gene Woods and Sammy Tanner, along with longtime announcer, actor Allen Fife.
?Our main focus is to give residents and visitors to Las Vegas a night of fun, affordable family entertainment in a unique atmosphere,? says Woods. ?When I moved up here from Southern California a few years ago, I noticed that despite all the entertainment the city had to offer, there weren?t a lot of attractions geared towards families. We?re excited to have the opportunity to put speedway motorcycle racing on the map here. It?s the purest form of racing, with bikes that run on alcohol and nitro and accelerate to 60 mph 2.5 times faster than a Formula One race car?all with no brakes, going around dirt ovals and taking those left hand corners.
?Motorcycles themselves have not changed much in the last 70 years, which I think helps explain their enduring appeal,? he adds. ?We?re harkening back to the day when riders were true personalities and had big fan followings, rather than just a bunch of random guys and girls in helmets who the crowds don?t know. One of the ways we connect our participants and the audience is our conduit announcer, ?Crazy Chris Ackerman,? who tells stories about the racers and their lives.?
In his heyday as a top racer, Woods?a three time U.S Open Speedway Champion who has raced everything from snowmobiles to monster trucks to NASCAR?participated in events throughout the U.S. and Europe, where speedway motorcycle racing is still the #2 sport behind soccer. He recalls racing everywhere from the old Czechoslovakia and the Netherlands to England, where it seemed every town had its own team. In its heyday, the U.S.?s top venues in Costa Mesa, San Bernardino, Ventura, Bakersfield ,Irwindale and Carlsbad, California held races six nights a week. When the Costa Mesa venue launched in 1969, Woods?whose older brother Rick Woods was a three time national champion and the sport?s first superstar?sold copies of the ?Cycle News? in the grandstand in the years before he entered competition as a junior participant.
?It?s great to have a venue so close to the center of town that offers this kind of raw, authentic racing,? says Woods. ?We?re looking forward to our grand opening and hope that on every race night, we have provided a good time to everyone in attendance and hopefully brought something to their lives which they have never before experienced. Once we have built a broad following, then we?ll get to work on adding more bleachers!?
